$24 Million Income Increase for Small-Plot Farmers

Commitment by

International Development Enterprises

In 2008, International Development Enterprises (iDE) committed to increase the aggregate income of 20,000 small-plot coffee farmers by $24 million by facilitating access to affordable irrigation, agronomy, training, and connections to global customers. This commitment expanded iDE's approach to smallholder coffee farming within Central America , and Ethiopia . In 2009, iDE expanded its focus to also include these families' food security needs, using similar drip irrigation techniques from coffee plants for high value horticulture crops during the coffee off-season. iDE continues to identify opportunities for the coffee farmers to diversify and increase income streams by growing other crops within the coffee farms.
