APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY
The Haiti Exemplar Community approaches rebuilding through the engagement of local Haitians through the Exemplar Community Development Committee, which represents diverse sectors of Haitian society. The Committee, whose Honorary Chairman is Leslie Voltaire, has 12 individuals as members with specific skills in human rights, law, microfinance, business, tourism, town planning, philanthropy, and real estate development. An international competition commissioned by the Government of Haiti, has selected the most promising entries to participate in a 'Housing Expo' that will take place in Port au Prince in October of 2010. The competition is allowing the Exemplar to call upon these winning submissions for implementation, bringing to the settlement the most innovative design solutions for the housing, sanitation and energy components. The inclusion of goals such as offering a first quality school, already committed and to open before year-end 2010, as well as other amenities, are intended to attract a mixed income community. An important task of the Committee is to define the optimal demographic mix for the settlement that serves the needs of the poorest of the poor, as well as more economically stable families that have assets and reliable income. The project is also seeking to define a new model for property ownership and governance that can be replicated throughout the country. A University Partner is being selected that will have the responsibility, over a two year period, to research, evaluate and document this work in a final report that will be shared with the international development community and will, hopefully, serve as an ongoing working tool for the continuing re-development of Haiti. Deutsche Bank and Digicel Foundation are the lead sponsors of the Exemplar community with additional support from John McAslan + Partners and OneXOne. In addition an American university is in the process of being selected which will serve as the official partner of the Exemplar Community for a two year period helping with technical assistance, research and dissemination of learnings to inform the larger redevelopment challenge for Haiti.
