CGI Commitment Development Fellowship

Location: New York, NY (Midtown), with some work from home
Period: Preferably full-time; April 2009 - September 2009
Level: Graduate Student
Compensation: Stipend

The Commitments Department at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) is looking for 5- to 6-month graduate-level fellows to serve as critical members of the team in the months leading up to our annual meeting. There are four focus areas available: Economic Opportunity; Global Health; Environmental Sustainability; Education/Human Capital. About the Commitment Development Fellowship

The Commitments Department has the primary responsibility for establishing and executing the strategy for helping CGI members develop new commitments. It works closely with CGI members (companies, NGOs, philanthropists, international organizations, and public agencies) as well as external experts to develop commitments. The Commitment Development Fellow will work closely with various members of the CGI team to research, track, and develop commitments. As part of this position they will be exposed to a wide range of global issues and interventions, and will interact with the people who are putting forward these interventions, many of which involve cross-sector partnerships. Fellows will become integral members of the team, working closely with CGI staff to support the development of commitments to action.. The fellow will have the opportunity to focus on a particular set of issues in international development (i.e. global health, economic opportunity, environmental sustainability, or education/human capital) by identifying opportunities for commitments, helping to review and analyze CGI member commitment proposals, and researching member interests. The Fellow will also interact with high-level individuals from the public and private sectors by joining meetings with CGI members and participating in member recruitment. The Fellow will support relationships with CGI members, guiding them through the commitment development process under the supervision of a commitment development senior manager. She/he will also collect and analyze commitment data for program evaluation and external communication purposes

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct outreach to current and prospective CGI members
  • Research potential CGI members who present strong prospects for commitments generation
  • Assist in refining member commitments to action 
  • Broker partnerships between members
  • Assist in logistics leading up to the Annual meeting
  • Assist in selecting commitments for various strategic communications opportunities (including case writing).

Minimum Requirements

  • Enrolled in a graduate level program related to international development and/or sustainability
  • Work experience is desirable in developing countries. Knowledge of Excel and basic statistics required
  • Experience in developing and managing relationships with diverse groups/environments and individuals preferred
