Statement by President and Secretary Clinton on the passing of C. Everett Koop

Hillary and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. C. Everett Koop. Dr. Koop was a devoted clinician, a courageous public servant, and an inspiration to generations of health professionals. As Surgeon General, he spoke hard truths about the dangers of tobacco use, the spread of AIDS, the importance of proper nutrition, and the societal costs of leaving millions of Americans without health insurance. He was a dedicated physician first and foremost, putting science and compassion ahead of politics, and we will always be particularly grateful for his advocacy and support during our push for health care reform. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues.
