Statement by President and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of Donald Payne

New York, NY
Statement

“ We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our friend Donald Payne. Donald was a force for peace and progress not just in the home district that he loved so much, but throughout the country and the world.

As the first black congressman from New Jersey, Donald was a role model and a voice for the voiceless. He spoke up and looked out for the disenfranchised, the impoverished, and anyone denied their human rights. In 1998, Bill toured parts of Africa with Donald and saw firsthand his dedication to Africa’s future. And whether he sat next to Hillary at hearings or across from her, he has been a powerful partner and passionate defender of working families and those who are suffering.

As he often said, ‘Nothing is as powerful as a dream whose time has come.’ Donald lived his dream and inspired countless others to do the same. His impact was immeasurable and his legacy will live on in the lives he has touched. We will miss him dearly. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”
