Clinton Foundation in Haiti

Growing the Haitian Coffee Sector

On November 15-16, 2011, the Foundation held the Haiti Coffee Summit in Furcy with more than 70 participants from all over the country and abroad. This two-day event was attended by Prime Minister Conille, Minister of the Interior Thierry Mayard-Paul, and Secretary of Agriculture Fresner Dorcin. This summit was a unique opportunity to have actors from across the spectrum in the coffee industry gather for a summit with workshops identifying major challenges in the sector today, and steps to move forward. Together with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Clinton Foundation is working to establish a Coffee Sector Working Group, which will ensure that positive developments continue. The Foundation is working closely with the Minister of Agriculture has also made available an on-line resource of documents, maps and reports regarding the Haitian coffee sector which is accessible on the Ministry’s website. Furthermore, the Foundation has facilitated new purchase agreements between Haitian coffee companies and cooperatives and international buyers.  Lastly, in 2012, the Foundation has been working with coffee-roasting company La Colombe and North Coast Development to provide new international markets for quality, Haitian coffee products and use revenue from these products to increase access to training, equipment and materials for farmers.
