A Commitment to Education in Haiti

In August 2010, the Boeing Company committed $900,000 to support the Clinton Foundation in its efforts to help reconstruct Haiti’s public education system. The grant is helping the Foundation implement the Haitian government’s education plan, targeting areas affected by the January 2010 earthquake and with an overall goal of developing a universally accessible public education system. 70 percent of the contribution will go to the Haitian government toward the reconstruction of schools, and 30 percent will be allocated to teacher training and curriculum materials. The Foundation has collaborated closely with the Ministry of Education to determine priority sites for reconstruction. Currently, with support from the Boeing Foundation, the Clinton Foundation is working with Architecture for Humanity to repair a central primary school in Delmas, which was destroyed by the earthquake. 

Additionally, in 2010, the Digicel Foundation in Haiti made a Commitment to Action through the Clinton Global Initiative to restore sound educational environments to 50 primary schools that were damaged or destroyed by the January 2010 earthquake. Initially, 15 transitional, modular schools were built and furnished in Port-au-Prince. Once the government of Haiti published school construction standards, the Digicel Foundation then continued to construct and furnish 35 permanent schools. The commitment's ultimate goal is to provide, over two years, 40,000 children with access to education through these schools. Additionally, upon completion of this commitment, the Digicel Foundation will have built 150 schools in Haiti since 2007. As of December 14, 2011, the Digicel Foundation, along with its partners, has completed all 50 schools, and has renewed their commitment to build 80 more schools.

Lastly, throughout 2012, the Clinton Foundation has been working with Greif Manufacturing to construct the first primary school and community center for the people of Lake Azuei with Operation Blessing.
