The CGI Community Responding to The Philippines Earthquake: How You Can Help

Share

Last week, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Cebu near Bogo City in the Philippines. Hundreds of aftershocks continued to rattle the region. At least 69 people have been confirmed dead, hundreds injured, and widespread damage has disrupted infrastructure, homes, power, roads, and essential services. The United Nations has pledged support and raised the visibility of the earthquake, and the UN International Organization of Migration is on standby to support displaced families.

Communities already weakened by recent typhoons are now reeling from yet another disaster. The earthquake has exacerbated vulnerabilities in health systems, water and sanitation, and local logistics.

In response, members of the CGI community have mobilized emergency relief efforts. Below is a snapshot of how you can help those affected.

Airlink

Airlink has sent skilled responders to the quake-affected area and has provided more than $10,000 in transport and logistics support to NGO partners. They will continue to support search and rescue operations, emergency sheltering, food assistance, and sanitation efforts.

They had transported over 800 hygiene and dignity kits the week before to help with the impact from tropical storms.

All Hands and Hearts

All Hands and Hearts is responding to the earthquake by partnering with their long-term in-country partner, Streetlight, to deliver immediate aid to sustain long-term recovery. They have provided six generators to power shelters and community hubs and are planning to distribute hygiene products to 4,000 households.

Americares

Americares has activated its emergency response team in the Philippines and is deploying 14 specialists to deliver medicine, tents, and mental health support. The organization plans to supply essential medicines for up to 1,400 patients, including treatments for chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension.

Americares already had a team on the ground in the region delivering disaster relief supplies following recent typhoons when the earthquake hit.

You can donate to support Americares here.

GlobalGiving

GlobalGiving has launched a targeted relief fund to channel donations directly into vetted partner organizations working on the ground in the hardest-hit communities. Donations will focus both on the short-term and the long-term; including helping in search and rescue, providing clean drinking water and food, re-building homes and infrastructure, and supporting local, community-led recovery efforts.

International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies

The International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is supporting the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) in delivering lifesaving assistance. The PRC teams were on the ground within hours, providing first aid, clean water, food, psychological support, rescue vehicles, generators, blood units, and more.

The teams plan to roll out a two-year comprehensive recovery strategy to help rebuild the lives of those affected.

You can donate to the IFRC here.

International Medical Corps

International Medical Corps (IMC) is working with local partners and authorities to provide immediate aid, including medical supplies, hygiene kits, and non-food essential items. They are also assessing longer-term needs by restoring health facility capacity, supplying equipment, and collaborating on training and preparedness.

You can donate to IMC here.

World Central Kitchen

World Central Kitchen (WCK) has sent a team to the Philippines to support food security efforts, preparing to provide meals to affected communities. They are meeting with local community members to best assess how to provide aid to those in need.

You can donate to WCK here.
