Healthcare Initiative
Children treated for ailments caused by obesity are roughly three times more expensive for the healthcare system than children of a normal weight. Each year, the healthcare industry spends $61 billion due to obesity, and as overweight children continue to be diagnosed with obesity-related health conditions previously only seen in adults, such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, the cost of treating these kids will continue to rise.
Obese kids often grow into obese adults, and yet healthcare providers, insurers and other industry representatives are simply not equipped to prevent, diagnose and treat the problem at an early age. The Alliance is working with industry experts to find ways for health care professionals to better combat this epidemic while improving industry bottom lines.
