Srey's Story

Srey's Story

Srey arrived at Maryknoll orphanage in Cambodia in October 2004. She was 3 years old, but weighed only six pounds.

Srey's mother, who was very sick, brought her to Maryknoll and never returned. At that time, she suffered from tuberculosis and malnutrition so severe that several hospitals did not want to treat her. Through a formula of diluted low-fat milk, water, oil and sugar, as well as a little bit of Hershey's chocolate syrup - which she loved - Srey was able to overcome her malnutrition. She was also put on antiretroviral drugs which improved her condition dramatically. When President Clinton visited the orphanage in December 2006, Srey was a happy 5 year old with a healthier future.

CHAI, with UNITAID funding, has become the world's largest buyer of pediatric fixed dose combination formulats and DNA PCR tests, and the third largest buyer of ready-to-use therapeutic food.
