Major Programs
No matter how low drug and test prices are, care and treatment cannot reach the people who need it most without the systems required to deliver and administer these commodities.
CHAI’s major programs work to bring care and treatment to the most vulnerable and marginalized populations, including children and people living in rural areas. CHAI has also established programs to help countries increase their human resource capacity, prevent the transmission of HIV from a mother to her child, and provide forecasts to analyze the most efficient way to utilize available resources. CHAI establishes these programs to fill gaps and implement effective, sustainable approaches that can be taken to scale. CHAI’s major programs are as follows:
- Pediatric Program – Access to pediatric treatment has historically been much more limited than adult treatment due to the complexities and cost of treating these young patients. CHAI’s Pediatric Program is focused on closing this gap by supporting the scale up of pediatric treatment programs in 34 countries throughout the world. Learn more.
- Rural Program – More than two- thirds of people in the developing world live in rural areas, where access to health care is often limited. CHAI’s Rural Program is working to bring care and treatment to these many under-served regions. Learn more.
- Human Resources for Health – In many countries, the absence of well-trained health care workers is one of the biggest impediments to delivering care and treatment to those who need it most. CHAI is supporting a number of governments to strengthen their human resource needs by helping to identify, recruit, train, and retain qualified health care workers. Learn more.
- Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) – In the developing world, mothers with HIV often pass the disease on to their children due to the lack of access to high quality anti- and post-natal care. CHAI’s PMTCT program aims to give mothers the treatment and resources needed to ensure their child is not infected with the disease. Learn more.
- Operations Research – Health care systems in the developing world often struggle to provide quality HIV/AIDS services because of a lack of capacity and financial resources. CHAI’s Consortium for Strategic HIV Operations Research (CSHOR) team uses operations research tools to help governments in low- and middle-income countries accelerate the implementation of high-quality HIV care and treatment by using tools to allocate and plan an efficient use of resources. PROFILE
As a result of AIDS, Mahetle's growth has been stunted for the past three years, and his weak immune system has caused him to suffer from persistent pneumonia. Thanks to CHAI, he will start taking antiretrovirals in the next few weeks.
