Commitment to Action

220 Million School Lunches Every Year

Commitment by

The Deshpande Foundation

In 2007, the Deshpande Foundation and the Akshaya Patra Foundation committed to partner together to scale Akshaya Patra's programs in India and provide a daily school lunch to one million children in India's government schools.
In 2008, Ravindra Chamaria worked with the Deshpande Foundation and the Government of India to expand the commitment by committing an additional $7 million to scale the Akshaya Patra school lunch program in India in an efficient, gradual, and sustainable manner. The commitment included a new kitchen in Orissa, India, expanding Akshaya Patra's existing kitchen in Uttar Pradesh and feeding additional 100,000 disadvantaged children from these two new facilities for three years. The grants were announced in September 2008. The first $428,571 was distributed over the past six months.
To date, Akshaya Patra has met and surpassed that commitment and now feeds over 1,228, 850 children daily across several Indian states. 200 Million School Lunches Every Year has increased school attendance, especially among girls, by incentivizing poor families to send their children to school instead of allowing them to do menial jobs. Furthermore, the project is embraced wholeheartedly by teachers and parents, thus creating a community dedicated to feeding and empowering the next generation.
