I-DEV International commits to facilitate million in transactions in equity, debt, and mezzanine capital to social enterprises and high-impact local businesses in emerging markets globally over the next 3 years.
For the past year and a half I-DEV has run a multi-country pilot of its investment banking services in South America and East Africa. In that time it was able to successfully facilitate and structure million of investments in 15 social enterprises and high-impact local businesses. With this commitment to facilitate million in transactions over the next 3 years, I-DEV will scale its Financial Services Group to provide investment banking and financial advisory services to social enterprises and SGBs throughout Latin America, East and West Africa, and South Asia. I-DEV will make these investments from its regional headquarters in Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia that operate in over 30 countries on 5 continents. The investments and advisory services will support SGBs ranging from early stage ventures to medium-scale sustainable infrastructure companies across all sectors from agriculture to clean technology. The vast majority of the social enterprises and high-impact local businesses that I-DEV raises capital for are creating a significant amount of sustainable jobs and are either led by women entrepreneurs, employ a significant number of women, engage women as consumers, or directly benefit women and girls (for example clean cookstove businesses).
I-DEV is a management strategy and financial advisory firm that specializes in emerging global markets, helping grow and scale competitive, viable, high-impact businesses. The organization does this by providing world-class business growth and investment strategy support to social enterprises and local SGBs via its Business Strategy Group and its Financial Services Group. The firm has developed a network of over 60 impact and emerging market investors with a total of billion in committed capital. The Financial Services Group within I-DEV is playing a vital role in leveraging this network to help high-impact SGBs scale through the injection of capital from impact-focused investors, corporate partnerships, and crowdfunding platforms.
I-DEV's commitment will be broken out by year with million of transactions structured and facilitated to SGBs in Latin America and East Africa in year 1 (2015), initial expansion to additional markets in West Africa and South Asia and million of transactions structured and facilitated in year 2 (2016), and finally million of transactions structured and facilitated globally in year 3 (2017).
Social enterprises and high-impact local small and growing businesses (SGBs) are playing an increasingly vital role in empowering communities and improving quality of life for people living at the base of the pyramid (BoP). They are also on the cutting edge of developing innovative, economically viable products, services, and business models for engaging billions of people at the BoP as suppliers and consumers. The impact investing/social enterprise sector is even beginning to see the first enterprises grow to the point where they are joint venture or acquisition targets for global corporations, for example Prudential PLC's recent acquisition of Express Life, a Ghanaian based insurance provider, from Leap Frog Investments. Nonetheless, the vast majority of impact focused enterprises and SGBs still need support accessing the right investment capital necessary to continue to grow and scale, at the right stage of enterprise.
I-DEV International is rapidly moving toward its goal of raising $100 million in capital for businesses that create greater opportunity at the base of the pyramid. However, I-DEV could increase its total impact if the I-DEV team of investment advisors was increased and if other players in the sector shared the benefits of our services with high-impact, high growth companies that are seeking to grow. I-DEV also seeks funding partners to support capacity development and investor readiness preparation for high-impact companies.
