APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY
Jawbone is releasing a new product called 'UP by Jawbone'. UP is a band the users wear all day and night integrated with an application on their phone that tracks aspects of their activity throughout the day and during night. UP is focused on three key aspects of health (Eat, Sleep, Move) that are governed by lifestyle and contribute to overall health. UP tracks these three aspects of activity with the combination of the small wearable band, for silently tracking movement throughout the day and sleep at night, with the phone application used to track meals with a simple picture and feedback on how the user feels all integrated into a view of the day known as the Lifeline. In addition to tracking, it is allows individuals (teachers) and Teams (schools) to sign-up for challenges that can be individual goal-based, competitive, or collaborative.
This UP challenge system will allow the Alliance to create fresh, relevant, and motivational challenges to the school staff, track their progress in real-time, and create competitive dynamics between schools.
IMPLEMENTATION, TIMELINE, AND DELIVERABLES
Jawbone will provide the Alliance for a Healthier Generation with 25,000 bands to be distributed to members of the Healthy School programs in the first half of 2012. The Alliance will identify a subset of schools where these bands can best be deployed to drive the greatest engagement across the greatest number of staff. Jawbone will work with the Alliance to create a series of challenges in the UP system directed to the participating schools. Jawbone will then work with the Alliance to track the progress of the participating schools and the relative engagement of these schools to help identify the impact of the schools that are actively engaged in living a healthy lifestyle versus those, which have not yet fully engaged.
The Healthy Schools Program has over 12,000 participating schools across the US. A key part of the program is for school staff to live a healthier life so that these same values and ways of living influence the habits and behavior of the children who surround them. According to the CDC, more than 68% of US adults are overweight or obese. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation is a relatively small organization with limited means to track daily adherence to the program, create frequent nudges to encourage increased engagement, provide up-to-date educational tidbits that translate into measurable action, or drive the competitive dynamic of one school real-time comparing to another.
