Commitment to Action

Diabetes in South Africa

Commitment by

World Diabetes Foundation

In 2006, the World Diabetes Federation (WDF) committed to impact diabetes in South Africa through a three-pronged approach: a school-based intervention program, early identification of diabetes in HIV positive people, and improvements in the quality of chronic care. As a result of this commitment health checks have been conducted among teachers in 82 schools, staff members from 45 health care centers have been trained in diabetic foot and eye screenings, and over 7000 diabetes patients have been screened for diabetic retinopathy.
