Clinicas del Azucar commits to create the 'Diabetes Online University,' a one-stop-shop website for Spanish-speakers looking for information about diabetes prevention and treatment. The website will target middle and low-income people in Mexico and the rest of Latin America, providing a platform for learning, collaboration, and real time discussion of the challenges and realities of living with diabetes. This site will revolutionize the way diabetes information is provided using the internet and mobile phones, helping millions of people to better understand their disease and inspire them to seek care. Clinicas del Azucar, in partnership with the Monterrey Institute of Technology, will develop the technological and medical information for the website.
The 'Diabetes Online University' will be launched in November 2013, during Clinicas del Azucar's celebration of World Diabetes Day. During a launch event, local and international partners will gather to define goals, milestones, and next steps for the commitment. This group will represent a collaborative group of pharmaceutical companies, government representatives, NGOs and healthcare organizations. Simultaneously, Clinicas del Azucar will promote the 'Diabetes Online University' through additional special events and campaigns. Even after the launch, Clinicas del Azucar will continue to seek new collaborative partnerships with other organizations and companies to build a wealth of information for the website, share best practices, and consistently upgrade the technology and approach.
Clinicas del Azucar will implement this commitment in several phases. First, the technological platform will be developed between January and June of 2014, with website content being developed until October of 2014. Finally, Clinicas del Azucar with pharmaceutical, NGO and government partners will promote the use of the website from November, 2014 until December, 2015.
Once developed, the website will include three main sections, 1.) an information hub where diabetes patients and their families can learn about diabetes care and train themselves to be 'diabetes ambassadors,' 2.) a training resource from which health professional can get up-to-date training as 'diabetes educators' and 3) a forum for diabetes patients and health professionals to discuss challenges and share best practices for living a healthy life with diabetes.
The goal of this commitment is to reach 50,000 users by December 2014 and 300,000 users by December 2015. At the end of 2015 Clinicas del Azucar will evaluate the effectiveness of the website by analyzing how many people join online courses and how many of them were motivated to seek diabetes care.
Diabetes is a catastrophe in Mexico and in Latin-America. In Mexico alone, there are more than 14 million people with diabetes and the disease is now the number one cause of death. More than 80,000 people die every year because they lack proper diabetes care. Clinicas del Azucar treats hundreds of patients every day in its clinics, and has found that education is one of the most important factors that motivates people with diabetes to seek care and change their habits. However, current education platforms offered in the Spanish language are limited and very fragmented. There is a great need to create a 'one-stop-shop' for diabetes education in Spanish.
