This commitment will mark the launch of Dubai Cares, a community-based fundraising campaign held during the Holy Month of Ramadan to raise primary education funds for over one million children in developing countries to assist those countries in achieving their UN Millennium Development Goals for providing Children's Primary Education to every child by 2015. This campaign sets out to build new school facilities; renovate/rehabilitate existing abandoned and/or damaged school premises; distribute school supply materials; award student scholarships; coordinate a feeding program at schools; provide an annual medical check-up for students and teachers; and provide training and workshop to benefit teachers. The proceeds of the campaign will go to build effective solutions in countries with less than 50% literacy rates and poverty indices.
Dubai Cares is Dubai's commitment to the global mission for a better tomorrow and His Highness' effort to bring the entire community of Dubai together to focus on a common global cause and to strategically invest the community's philanthropic dollars to ensure the highest level of impact to the desired recipients. Dubai is committed to being a responsible global citizen and broadening its scope of obligations and commitment to a global level. A long-term strategy to address global issues, Dubai Cares stems from Dubai's own realization that it belongs to a global village and investing in its welfare and progress will have positive returns for its own welfare and progress.
This campaign was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and enjoys the personal commitment of his sons and daughters, each of whom are leading initiatives and promotions throughout the campaign. Sheikhs Rashid, Hamdan, Maktoum, Ahmed, Mayed and Sheikhas Manal and Maitha will spearhead a number of initiatives including a Corporate Social Responsibility Program; a School Charity Program; and government promotions, e.g., a license plate sale to benefit charity.
By committing itself to education, Dubai looks to guarantee the development of members of the global community that do not have the means but have the promise. Through Dubai Cares, His Highness is instilling the spirit of proactive fundraising for a global cause among the people, businesses and organizations of Dubai, and reminding them they are part of an interconnected global community.
One hundred and twenty million school-age children are not enrolled in primary education; one in every three children in developing countries does not complete five years of primary education, the minimum required for achieving basic literacy. Of the children who do not attend school, 58% - more than half - are girls. This gender gap in education is a major obstacle to alleviating poverty.
