Earth Insights: Big Data for Better Conservation

Commitment by

HP Inc., Conservation International

In 2014, HP and Conservation International (CI) committed to building on and promoting the adoption of data analytic solutions that enable public and private sector entities with authority, operations, and/or investments in tropical forests to scale and apply these data-driven methods of biodiversity monitoring to relevant conservation and development decisions for more sustainable environmental and economic outcomes. This commitment builds on the first generation of scientific protocols and technology solutions currently being used to accelerate and improve the collection, analysis, and sharing of data related to vegetation, species, carbon stocks, and climate in 17 tropical forests across 15 countries. HP and CI will deliver multi-scale and real-time understanding of how key elements of Earth's operating system, specifically climate, carbon stocks, and biodiversity, are changing, and what this means for the well-being of people and ecosystem services.
