Edesia now produces four different Nutriset Ready-to-Use Foods (RUFs) designed to address the many stages of childhood malnutrition: Plumpy'Nut®, Plumpy'Sup, Plumpy'Doz, and Nutributter®. These RUFs come packaged in small silver foil sachets and do not need the addition of water, refrigeration, and have a shelf life of two years. These products are delivered to children for free through distribution partners such as UNICEF and the World Food Programme, who, as customers, purchase them from Edesia at cost. Geographically, Edesia has been primarily focused on Latin America and West Africa, and has responded to humanitarian disasters, including the earthquake in Haiti, floods in Pakistan, the famine in the Horn of Africa, the drought in the Sahel, and the recent crises in Syria and Mali. Navyn has organized Edesia to respond to these emergencies rapidly, efficiently, and cost-effectively-as the bottom line is always measured in the number of children reached.
In addition to production activities, Edesia has engaged in public outreach to raise the profile of childhood malnutrition in the United States. Each year, Edesia welcomes 40-50 visitors a month for educational tours in the factory. In 2013, Navyn will continue to keep Edesia's focus on innovation and advocacy to ensure that this important issue remains high on the world's agenda. In her own words, reflecting her deep and unwavering commitment to her goal of ending childhood malnutrition, she says, 'I will not rest until we have made measurable and significant impact.'
Since the opening of the factory, 70,000,000 sachets/cups with high quality standards have been produced. Edesia has shipped products to 28 countries.
In addition to production, Edesia in collaboration with Nutriset and MFK (Meds & Foods for Kids) created a new product, developed specifically for school aged children, which will be trialed in Haiti throughout 2012. Since opening in March 2009, 805,284 children were reached with full preventative and/or therapeutic treatment over a 2-6 month period.
Edesia has also advocated for awareness building through strategic partnerships, Congressional briefings, presentations at conferences, grassroots fund raising campaigns, and media spotlights. These efforts informed people of the areas in the world with greatest nutrition needs and highlighted ways to get involved in the work.
During the summer of 2012, Edesia will invest in more equipment, doubling their capacity and allowing them to respond to larger requests from partners.
