MWH commits lead a robust energy reduction program involving specific, company-wide reduction targets, client engagement, and community education programs. The three key components of MWH's commitment are as follows:
1. Client Engagement
MWH will engage clients to educate and drive emissions reductions in their energy projects. We will incorporate targets and metrics into our project delivery processes; continue creating opportunities for sustainable development, and advocate for sustainable projects. Client-facing managers will receive training to facilitate sustainable business practices. Those best-practices will be brought to our clients through workshops. Targeted actions:
Provide climate change education to middle-school level students.
Provide client workshops on sustainability, with a focus on creating a sustainability organization.
Incorporate emission and energy reduction into our projects through sustainability design charettes with our clients.
Leverage and expand our successful sustainability delivery integration system, demonstrating the value of a life-cycle approach to delivering energy and resource-efficient infrastructure design to clients.
2. Carbon Neutrality
MWH will become a carbon neutral organization by reducing emissions, educating staff, and implementing carbon-offset projects. Targeted actions:
Assess and review the company's carbon emissions footprint by March 2007.
Develop and implement MWH's global carbon emissions reduction policy.
Develop and implement MWH's travel reduction policy.
Develop and implement community tree-planting program to off setting MWH's carbon emissions.
3. Community Education
Partner with our clients and our communities to educate children on the water cycle and climate change. Targeted actions:
Create a climate change and water cycle educational module for our MWH global communities.
Engage our MWH young professionals and partner with clients and communities to educate children and foster excitement in the science of climate change.
Evaluate and revise the module based on feedback.
Leave a legacy through our educational module following conclusion of the program.
The MWH commitment is global in geographic scope. MWH will be implementing our commitment across our operating groups and throughout our three geographic regions:
EMEAI - Europe, Middle East, Africa and India
SAP - South Asia Pacific (including China)
By measuring progress, MWH can better inform its community about the results achieved. We expect our metrics to evolve and improve as we gain more experience and introduce new ideas.
Initially, we will measure progress according to indicators such as: number of senior staff / clients educated, hours of education delivered, number of middle-school education programs, percentage of projects with integrated sustainable performance metrics, amount of emissions offset through company-wide reduction measures (operations, travel) and tree-planting.
MWH, a global leader and environmental firm, provides knowledge-driven services with 6,100 specialists in 36 countries. MWH delivers integrated solutions to municipalities, government agencies, multinational companies, industrial concerns and military organizations worldwide. Our expertise includes environmental engineering, power generation, facilities development, laboratory services, construction, multi-sector program management, asset management, financial services, IT consulting, government relations and applied science. 'Building a better world' is our core value.
Our CEO, Bob Uhler, attended the second annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative. He felt a strong impact from the ideas discussed and communicated this to his senior staff. Mr. Uhler realized that while no single corporation could solve the global challenges identified at the conference, each could make a difference. The MWH presidents and senior staff researched and developed this commitment together with sustainable development enthusiasts from across the globe.
MWH has over 150 years of demonstrated experience in 'building a better world' through our achievements and efforts in the communities in which we work. While we have participated in education programs in communities throughout the world, this commitment will be the first time MWH has focused our community-education efforts through a corporate wide, global program. While MWH has integrated socially and environmentally responsible processes into our work, this commitment is the first time MWH is formally engaging clients and proactively seeking opportunities to embed and inspire sustainability throughout our entire business in partnership with our vast network of clients.
Finally, while MWH has championed sustainable internal practices in our European, Australian and New Zealand offices, this commitment is the first time MWH will extend its commitment throughout the entire organization. Thus, this commitment extends MWH's efforts to build a better world-drawing on our heritage of environmentally conscious, community-focused work-and also focuses on delivering specific results through the Clinton Global Initiative commitment process.
MWH will be engaging with client and community partners to continue championing sustainability. We will pursue partnerships with private and public entities at municipal, state, regional and national levels. Government organizations interested in sustainable project delivery, sustainable business practices, and community education will be a particular focus.
