Educational Access for 150,000 Rural Schoolchildren
In 2009, DonorsChoose.org committed to provide increased educational access to underserved rural communities in the United States. Through this commitment, DonorsChoose.org's initial goal was to inspire 5,000 citizen philanthropists and institutional stakeholders to provide $2.7 million in resources to 150,000 students in 2,800 classrooms in hard-to-reach schools in the United States. As a result of the 5,700 projects brought to life, DonorsChoose.org and its partners expected to see a significant increase in teachers' ability to innovate in underserved rural schools, as well as an increase in the academic readiness of their students.
From September 2009 to September 2010, DonorsChoose.org delivered $2.94 million to rural classrooms, exceeding their original goal by 10%. With this money, over 6,250 projects have been started in rural classrooms, impacting more than 187,600 students.
