Airbnb commits to promoting womens economic participation, in the following ways: 1) Providing women with access to travel through Airbnbs platform; and 2) Conducting research on the impact of home sharing on female hosts.
ACCESS TO TRAVEL
Airbnb, in partnership with Global Fund for Women and Vital Voices, will support the travel needs of several hundred female entrepreneurs, small business owners, and human rights activists. Airbnb is committed to supporting mission-critical travel for women leaders and activists across the extensive networks of these two organizations to help advance their missions.

Airbnb will also support the Vital Voices Global Leadership Network in need of accommodations for small group convenings around the world to share best practices, exchange ideas and find ways to collaborate on issues ranging from economic empowerment, protection of human rights, public policy and gender equality. The partnership will focus on women leaders and activities in three regions: Latin America, Middle East and Africa. Together, Airbnb and Vital Voices will support the travel needs of 10 high potential women entrepreneurs for the purpose of advancing market access opportunities for their businesses. In addition. , 30 female leaders will be supported to travel for professional development and networking opportunities, and 15 women leaders with travel for peer-to-peer learning opportunities across sectors and regions. Furthermore, Airbnb will support Vital Voices staff travel for a mission-critical retreat to develop the programming for their top 100 leaders network.
Airbnb and its partners will use 2016 as a pilot year for the travel credit grants. At the end of the year, the partners will evaluate and determine the most impactful approach for future years.
As part of this commitment, Airbnb will continue to focus on the economic impact of home sharing on female hosts on our platform by conducting a dedicated study of female hosts on Airbnb. The study will aim to understand how female hosts engage with Airbnb, how they use the money they earn, and the ways in which being a host can support women's efforts towards self-sufficiency. The study will include special focus on host communities in Africa and Latin America. The report will be published publicly in written form, and shared with local organizations dedicated to empowering women - in an effort to explore how women can capitalize on the opportunities created by home sharing.
With the recent adoption of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we have marked the beginning of a new era of international development. Gender is a central feature of the SDGs Outcome Document; it is highlighted as a standalone outcome and goal (SDG 5), and is integrated throughout the agreement. Never before has addressing gender inequality been so integral to a global development commitment.
In order to advance gender equality targets, Airbnb is joining a holistic coalition of multi-sectoral partners convened by No Ceilings, Vital Voices, and WEConnect International, focusing on three core issue areas of work 1) Promoting Womens Economic Participation; 2) Addressing Violence Against Girls and Women; and, 3) Advancing Womens Leadership in both Private and Public sectors.

Through this commitment, Airbnb will support both female entrepreneurs and leaders who may not have access to tools that advance their professional and humanitarian goals. Airbnb will also direct specific research around ways to increase womens economic participation in the hospitality industry.
Travel is one of the biggest and fastest growing industries in the world, and it is an especially important source of economic activity in developing countries. However, the revenue that is generated by tourism doesnt always stay with locals. Airbnb is different; it can have enormous impact on developing countries by encouraging global travelers to connect directly to the local economy, and 97% of the price a host charges for their space goes directly to the host (Airbnb takes a 3% fee). This is particularly impactful for female hosts, who make up the majority of Airbnb communities in developing countries.. As part of this commitment, Airbnb will continue to focus on the benefits of home sharing on the female host community by conducting a dedicated study of female Airbnb hosts across the world.
As part of this work, Airbnb is teaming up with nonprofits that support and advance the rights of women and girls across the globe. Working with organizations like Vital Voices and Global Fund for Women, Airbnb can help provide free, short term accommodations for the organizations mission critical travel needs. Airbnb understand that travel can be transformative, but when it comes to conferences, convenings and professional development opportunities, its often a luxury that many grassroots NGOs and activists cannot afford.
Airbnb is working with Vital Voices and Global Fund for Women to extend travel opportunities to their global network of female leaders, entrepreneurs and human rights activities. Vital Voices is a global nonprofit that identifies, invests in and brings visibility to extraordinary women around the world by unleashing their leadership potential to transform lives and accelerate peace and prosperity in their communities. Global Fund for Women is a global champion that uses its powerful networks to find, fund, and amplify the courageous work of women who are building social movements, defending human rights and challenging the status quo.
