Commitment to Action

Harnessing the Power of Parents to Close the Word Gap

Commitment by

LENA Research Foundation

In 2015, United Way of San Diego (UWSD) and LENA Research Foundation committed to implement the LENA Start™ early intervention model with 165 families in San Diego County over two years in order to promote early language development in low-income communities. Using LENA “talk pedometer” technology and software to measure the amount of talk in a child’s environment, families will receive guidance and feedback to increase the quantity and quality of personal interactions with their babies. UWSD will use the promotora model of community outreach, a peer-to-peer outreach model, to engage families in various venues ranging from clinics, to child care facilities, to preschools.
