Groupe AMH, in partnership with the OCP Foundation, commits to create a production site for wheelchairs in Khouribga, Morocco; an area that currently is experiencing low rates of unemployment. This commitment will replicate a successful pilot project, NoorWheels, which was conducted in partnership with USAID and the American NGO RocWheels in 2010, located in the Noor Medical Center in Bouskoura, a health reeducation center constructed by the Groupe in 2002.
Groupe AMH will invest in research and development to build the new wheelchairs out of aluminum, a lighter and more affordable material than what is currently being used.
The additional production site will lead to an increase in production capacity, over three years, from 460 to 1,600 wheelchairs. In addition to increasing wheelchair production in Morocco, Groupe AMH is also expanding the eligible demographic, from previously only being available to children and adolescents, to now include adults.
In this social entrepreneurship initiative, Groupe AMH will use its expertise developed during the pilot project to expand its impact. This project is expected to benefit more than 3,560 people.
As a main financial partner, the OCP Foundation will provide access to an existing facility for the production site, supporting the infrastructural development of the center as well as the product distribution scheme for the NoorWheels project. OCP Foundation will leverage the well-developed distribution network it utilizes for its own goods thus enhancing Groupe AMH perspectives of commercial development in other African countries.
Prior to the official start date of the commitment, a preparation phase is underway and will be completed before 12/31/2015. This phase consists in the evaluation of existing resources.
