APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY
The incubator model facilitates communication between entrepreneurs through physical proximity. RallyPad will therefore be centered in a large physical space in downtown San Francisco, where members will have access to desks, event space, and mentorship programming. Use of the space will also be open to the public as detailed below.
RallyPad Membership: Social ventures - both individuals and established organizations - can apply for RallyPad membership starting in the fall of 2011. Applicants will be evaluated based on the strength of their social venture idea, their demonstrated commitment to bringing that concept to life, and the diversity they will bring to the RallyPad community. Up to thirty organizations will be selected for RallyPad membership. Members will have guaranteed access to RallyPad desks, which feature all standard office benefits, plus perks common to well-funded technology incubators, such as subsidized lunch and yoga classes. Membership is valid for at least one year, subject to re-evaluation at the end of the pilot program period.
RallyPad Mentorship: Over the last several years, Rally (formerly Piryx) has been a trusted fundraising tool for many nonprofits. As such, Rally has strong connections to experts in fields like nonprofit development, technology, management, and public relations, among others. Rally will invite 30 of these individuals, plus individuals whom Rally meets at CGI, to participate in a structured mentorship program for RallyPad members. Of the 30 invited to participate, Rally aims to have a mentor pool of 15 to 20 people.
RallyPad for Non-Members: A reserved number of 'floating' desks will be available to visiting social ventures when they are in San Francisco. RallyPad will also host public seminars and lectures in which advisors from the mentorship program will provide advice and training to the broader social venture & nonprofit community. Finally, RallyPad will host a series of events and meet-ups where members of the public can volunteer their expertise (e.g. software development, data analysis, product design, etc.) over the course of an afternoon or weekend to help RallyPad members further their vision.
IMPLEMENTATION, TIMELINE, AND DELIVERABLES
Rally will begin accepting applications for RallyPad's pilot membership year in the fall of 2011 and will provide resources to a target of 30 accepted organizations/individuals between their matriculation into the program and September 2012.
Rally will develop and implement the RallyPad mentorship program as a slow build over the course of the year-long pilot program. Rally will begin reaching out to potential mentors in fall of 2011, with a goal of onboarding at least 10 committed mentors by January 2012. By September of 2012, the full cohort of mentors will be fully active in the community.
Starting in November of 2011, RallyPad will host seminars, lectures, and other sessions open to the public at least twice per month.
In September 2012, Rally will fully evaluate the success of the RallyPad program, and transition the pilot into a more concrete program.
All too often, early stage social ventures lack the operational resources, knowledge, and networks they need to achieve their vision for social good. According to the Internal Revenue Service, 75 percent of nonprofit organizations in the U.S. have annual revenue under $100,000. A majority of this money goes to direct programming, forcing social ventures to skimp on necessities like staff training, technology tools, office space, and proactive fundraising. According to the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, 'the lack of core operating support distorts and undermines the operations of nonprofits individually and collectively.'
RallyPad will provide small social ventures with the operational support they need to change the world. As a leading provider of fundraising software, Rally is uniquely positioned to offer expertise and mentorship in technology and donor outreach. To provide a truly 360-degree support program, however, Rally will partner with experts in other fields like leadership, grant-writing, and volunteer management.
