The tools and methodology used to implement this commitment include:
1. Capacity Building to Improve Leadership: ACEVO/Euclid Network hosted a series of eight, two-day workshops in Cairo that brought together 50 NGO participants, providing them with the tools and methodologies needed to improve their leadership within the region. In addition, there were supplementary meetings that gathered other major stakeholders, including government actors and donors, that met in order to fully understand and improve relations with the NGOs working in the region.
2. Creating an Online Report: The results of the workshops were compiled in an online report that provided other parties, including external donors, with an excellent body of research. This report will provide the basis for ACEVO/Euclid Network's leadership program for the region over the next three years, and will allow ACEVO/Euclid Network to integrate found results into established leadership courses specifically tailored to the needs of NGO leaders in the region.
3. Building Partnerships: There were opportunities for workshop participants to network and explore opportunities for partnership with NGOs from across the region. The relationships formed at the workshops will be preserved through a new interactive and innovative website. In the long-run, the workshops will be used by ACEVO/Euclid Network to establish how ACEVO/Euclid Network can meet the needs to support and develop third sector leaders in the region; bring MENA and its civil society closer to their European peers; and work with EU institutions to better support the region in its development.
The state of NGO leadership is splintered and currently provides a barrier to NGO development. As a result, opportunities for partnership and collaboration with European civil society are both underdeveloped and unexplored. ACEVO/Euclid Network is in a unique position to change this, possessing both the vision and experience required to do so. There has been little research on the common needs of NGO leaders within the region, and how these can best be addressed or accommodated. Furthermore, there is little guidance for leaders, and leadership training facilities are limited. Improving the relationship between NGOs and governments, and improving government accountability is paramount.
ACEVO/Euclid Network's commitment seeks to address these problems with its successful methodology of promoting democracy and the empowerment of leaders through leadership networks within countries, across borders, and across boundaries.
SEEKING: financial assistance, implementing partners. ACEVO/Euclid Network seeks both regional and international donors to aid this commitment, and is also looking for all interested partners based specifically within MENA.
OFFERING: implementing partnership, best practice information. ACEVO/Euclid Network can provide expertise in civil society leadership development, and contacts through its unparalleled innovative network of third sector leaders.
