Details

The Tenerife Island Government will host an international conference that will bring together technical experts, government officials, renewable energy industry executives and economic development specialists from all around the world to talk about scientific breakthroughs, technological trends, best practices, and case studies pertaining to renewable energy. A second, but equally important goal is to make the conference and the knowledge generated from it accessible to representatives from African nations.

Background

Tenerife has invested heavily in the utilization renewal energy sources, most significantly in windmill turbines and solar energy. Furthermore, Tenerife's strategic location and expanding infrastructure make it an ideal gateway for channeling renewable energy know-how and technologies to the African continent where they are greatly needed.

- Hosted Conference June 26-28, 2006 with participation by the following:
- Mr. Miguel Angel Moratinos, Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation; D. Landing Savane, State Minister of the Republic of Senegal; Mr. Enrique V. Iglesias, Ibero-American General Secretary; D. Wolfgang Palz, Executive Member of the Renewable Energy World Council; D. Federico Cuello, President of the ACP Group; D. Juan Manuel Suárez del Toro, President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies; Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF); Delegations from Mozambique, Algeria, Morocco, Senegal, Cape Verde, Mauritania, Equatorial Guinea, Western Sahara, Gambia, Ghana; Spanish and European NGOs; European and Spanish Development Co-operation Agencies; International companies providing goods and services for development cooperation and humanitarian aid.
- Planning has begun for future conferences in African countries (currently for Senegal 2007), in addition to joint actions with Foundations in Africa.
