APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY
The uhireUS approach is to proclaim November 1, 2011 as National Jobs Day with the goal of kick-starting the economy by adding a million net new jobs in America by businesses hiring 'just one more.' There will be uhireUS newspaper advertising and social media outreach asking companies to add one person for every 50 now on the payroll. The message is: 'Got up to 50 employees? Make it one more. Got 100 employees? Make it 102. If enough of you, hire only one unemployed person for every 50 on your payroll, that's all we need to help America gain a million or more jobs in a single month.'
uhireUS believes that it is up to the business community to get America growing again. At the same time, whatever support government is willing and able to provide would be welcome. As a second stage strategy, uhireUS is reaching out to the governors of several states to consider a no-cost subsidy for firms that hire the jobless during our jobs campaign.
For example, state governments can take the unemployment insurance payments formerly provided to those finding jobs and convert those dollars into re-employment assurance payments for businesses hiring from the ranks of the unemployed. uhireUS is also in discussions with several US Senators on creating additional federal tax incentives for those who hire from the unemployed. With such incentives, there is no limit to the number of establishments that might be willing to join in making National Jobs Day and the following months a resounding success.
IMPLEMENTATION, TIMELINE, AND DELIVERABLES
Implementation of the uhireUS initiative at this point is in the hands of volunteers from the worlds of business, media, advertising and academia:
The Crossbow Group in Westport CT is building a state-of-the-art National Jobs Day website to foster engagement with uhireUS's various constituencies: out-of-work Americans, businesses of every size, state governments, the federal government, and college seniors. Slingshot, an advertising agency in Dallas TX is producing the launch newspaper advertising. Engauge, a pacesetter in social media, is guiding the online relationship marketing efforts of involved college and university students. Engine Company 1, a San Francisco based branding company, is creating awareness advertising.
A number of the Champlain College students instrumental in launching the 'Hireland' initiative while studying abroad in Dublin are now helping in the U.S. and enlisting further student support for uhireUS across the country. Our blog at www.uhireus.blogspot.com and our Facebook page went 'live' early in August. The media campaign now being prepared for TV, print media, billboards and digital channels is expected to launch on or about October, 1, 2011.
Acxiom Corporation is preparing a series of communications to other large businesses to enlist their support and commitment.
We are also working with various Governors and members of Congress to have November 1, 2011 declared National Jobs Day as well as creating economic incentives for businesses to hire unemployed people.
Two drivers bring about job growth. One is government, the other is business. The ability of government to reverse sky-high unemployment by hiring people is in reverse gear, as it is cutting back on jobs. Private sector businesses must create the jobs needed to deal with the United States' devastating unemployment crisis. But there is a further problem blocking action from that direction. The path to profits set in motion by the Great Recession remains fixed on cutting costs by shedding workers rather than investing in people to fuel growth.
The uhireUS message is not just about making a dent in the number of unemployed. It is equally about encouraging a change in the mindset of business leaders from self-protection to risk-taking ingenuity that puts the jobless back to work.
The biggest drain on the US's economy is the painfully high unemployment rate which remains elevated more than 30 months after the recession was declared over. Those counted as unemployed and those unable to find full-time work total over 25 million Americans. Nothing like it has been seen since the Great Depression.
