Visa Inc. is committed to making a difference in the world by tackling the long term challenge of poverty through the promotion of entrepreneurship and small business development among low-income individuals and communities worldwide. Although global poverty is a massive issue that Visa cannot conquer alone, the company believes that by focusing its philanthropy and expertise in electronic payments toward expanding opportunity to those in need, Visa Inc. can make a meaningful contribution to tackling this global challenge.
The program is built on three pillars:
1) Combating Poverty: Through a combination of its business expertise and focused philanthropic efforts, Visa can play an innovative role in developing long-term solutions to reduce poverty. Improving access to financial services and electronic payments is a critical building block to enabling 'inclusive economic growth' - helping people to improve their lives and lift themselves out of poverty.
2) Humanitarian Aid: Visa is committed to working with leading humanitarian aid organizations that have the expertise and ability to help individuals in vulnerable communities around the world, including in cases involving disaster relief.
3) Corporate Responsibility Commitments: Visa is committed to operating with integrity and obeying all applicable laws and regulations when conducting business around the world.
Visa is in the early stages of developing its CSR program. The company has a framework in place and a management commitment to move forward, but recognizes it has significant work to do to determine the specific implementation plan for reaching its objectives.
Visa intends to fulfill this commitment to poverty alleviation and expanded growth through several initiatives, for example: (1) Support for microfinance programs to help unleash entrepreneurial talents that are so critical to economic development in poorer countries; (2) Development of new technologies and payments infrastructure, such as mobile banking, to help expand access to financial services; and (3) Financial literacy programs that help people better manage their finances, as well as understand their financial responsibilities.
For more than 10 years, Visa has been developing financial literacy education programs to help teach individuals about how to budget, save, and spend more wisely and responsibly. Programs, such as 'Practical Money Skills for Life' and 'What's My Score,' are now active in over 20 countries worldwide.
