Walisuma: The Best We Have (Bolivia)

In 2009, Fundacion Nuevo Norte, as part of the newly created brand Walisuma, committed to develop and market high quality products based on Aymara and Quechua, Bolivia, ancestral experience and traditions and offer them to distinguished buyers in high-end markets. Walisuma will allow some 50,000 artisans, small producers, and small farmers to gain a sustainable source of income by strategically positioning their unique products in niche markets through the Walisuma brand.
In this commitment, Fundaci?n Nuevo Norte works with artisans and small producers to help improve their design capacity and quality control systems with a focus on restoring and refining ancestral and traditional production methods. These products preserve and promote ancestral Bolivian knowledge and traditions, unique indigenous cultures, and the diversity of Bolivian landscapes through environmentally friendly production methods.
Since October 2009, Walisuma's flagship store has been operating in La Paz. A second store opened in La Paz in September 2010. In 2011, following a realization that the brand could be more representative of Bolivians if it had a stronger presence in domestic markets, Nueva Norte expanded its commitment to enhance rural supply in a separate but complimentary program to Walisuma. This effort will directly benefit more than three thousand Bolivian producers with better and greater access to markets, and a sustainable source of income that, in the medium term, will enable them to improve their production and living conditions.
