Window of Opportunity: Integrated Health & Development

Commitment by

PATH, Bhp Billiton Limited

In 2011, PATH and BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities committed to develop a five-year, multipronged, integrated child health and development initiative to improve health outcomes for children under two in parts of South Africa and Mozambique. As a funding partner on this commitment, BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities supported PATH's efforts to identify and strengthen existing local health and development systems and engage local communities. To do so, PATH will conduct detailed assessments of care structures in place and organize participatory planning activities with key members of the community. They will then develop a plan to: improve the quality and range of clinical and community-based services; increase behaviors among caregivers that positively impact children under two; and share the lessons they learn from affected communities. In doing so, they hope to see visible increases in neonatal survival rates, HIV/AIDS treatment adherence, breastfeeding, and infant nutrition; and improved community ownership over quality services.
