APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY
The DNA Foundation has three specific areas in which it will focus: advocacy and outreach, technology tools, and law enforcement. The DNA Foundation Advocacy and Outreach initiative aims to combine the power of social and traditional media with subject knowledge and expertise to raise awareness of child sex trafficking and encourage a societal shift. The DNA Foundation Anti-Trafficking Technology initiative will develop a clear understanding of how predators are using technology to enable their crimes and will subsequently disrupt their ability to use these tools. The DNA Foundation Law Enforcement initiative will identify and document a wide range of best practice anti-trafficking policies and provide agencies with the training and start-up funds needed to implement them.
The Anti-Trafficking Technology initiative is focused on a number of specific projects, including: creating a trafficking webcrawler to gather data on how predators use the internet to enable sex crimes; building a blacklist/greylist to bolster the current anti-trafficking efforts of major technology companies; and developing various predator deterrent tools which will help deter 'situational' predators. The goal of these initiatives is to inform and educate internet users about the dangers of child sex trafficking and child pornography and deter predators from engaging in this illegal activity.
IMPLEMENTATION, TIMELINE, AND DELIVERABLES
The DNA Foundation is currently working in all three areas, but one major focus is its efforts to develop and implement anti-trafficking technology tools with key members of the technology world. The objective is to eliminate the risk-free internet anonymity that allows predators and traffickers to use the internet for sex crimes against children. These tools are currently being developed and will be implemented throughout the next year. The DNA Foundation will utilize a number of methods to determine whether its efforts have made an impact on demand and will disseminate this information to the broader community.
Despite advances in many human rights areas, slavery is thriving in the modern world. More people are slaves today than ever before and the numbers are soaring. There are between 150,000 and 300,000 children currently enslaved in the United States and over 12 million people enslaved worldwide. Men, women and children are enslaved for many purposes including sex, pornography, forced labor and indentured servitude. Among these slaves, children are the most vulnerable and their rights are the least recognized. The DNA Foundation aims to raise awareness about this issue and put an end to child sex slavery through various anti-trafficking initiatives.
