Zinc and Nutrition Initiative

Commitment by

The Micronutrient Initiative, Teck Resources Limited, UNICEF, International Zinc Association

In 2009, the Zinc and Nutrition Initiative (ZNI) committed to improve the survival and health of children and to enhance food security through a two-pronged approach of zinc supplementation programs and zinc fertilizer, with a combined financial commitment of $8,000,000. Towards this end, the ZNI had a goal of raising $5,000,000 over three years to address zinc deficiency in target populations (initially Peru and Nepal) through the use of supplementation programs. A key step has been taken on this first activity with the Zinc Saves Kids initiative being launched by IZA and Unicef. Further, the zinc industry has agreed to fund at least $3,000,000 of the initial $5,000,000 goal for the Zinc Saves Kids effort. For the second part of this commitment--increasing awareness and use of zinc fertilizer to increase crop productivity and nutritional value--$1,250,000 has been invested with a number of workshops being held, communication materials developed, human resources added in target countries, and more than 50 demonstration.
