Affordable Housing: Access and Innovation

3:00 PM – 3:30 PM

In the United States, systemic racial disparities in homeownership have led to gaps in wealth generation and community development across the country, and these disparities are growing. Today, 72 percent of White Americans own their homes, while the homeownership rate for Black Americans and Latinos is only 42 percent and 48 percent, respectively. Without more action and support from the public sector, private sector, and civil society we risk seeing the wealth gap persist far into the future. In this discussion, President Clinton and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Marcia Fudge will discuss the importance of homeownership to expanding economic opportunities and building generational wealth, as well as innovative solutions and successful models that are currently helping more American own homes.

Participants:

  • President Bill Clinton, Founder and Board Chair, Clinton Foundation, 42nd President of the United States (Moderator)
  • Secretary Marcia L. Fudge, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

Affordable Housing for a Warming America

3:30 PM – 4:00 PM

According to recent studies, more than 40 percent of Americans live in a county that was impacted by a weather-related disaster in 2021. As more Americans are confronted with the effects of a warming planet, the nation’s current housing stock is ill-equipped to adapt to these increasingly intense natural disasters. Our affordable housing stock is particularly vulnerable, as recent projections suggest that the number of affordable housing units exposed to flooding will triple by 2050. Strategies that bolster America’s affordable housing stock, create more resilient communities, and mitigate the impacts of natural disasters are more important than ever. In this discussion, leaders from the frontlines of America’s climate and housing crises will outline their solutions and approaches to create more equitable, inclusive, and climate-resilient affordable housing in the United States.
