Black History Month Educator Workshop Part 2

Join us for Part 2 of our Black History Month professional development workshop on Saturday, March 1 from 9 to 11 a.m. Part 2, Expanding the Narrative: Year-Round Approaches to Teaching Black History, will equip educators with strategies to teach African American and African Diaspora history throughout the year, rather than limiting discussions to Black History Month.

Teachers will explore foundational concepts, including the Declaration of Independence and the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. The session will emphasize the interconnectedness of African American history with broader American history and the African Diaspora’s global impact. Educators will learn how to incorporate Black historical narratives into everyday lessons using primary sources to position Black history as an integral part of the curriculum rather than an isolated topic.

Additionally, the session will cover best practices for maintaining historical accuracy, fulfilling educational responsibilities to students, and adhering to school district and Arkansas Department of Education guidelines. Practical examples of inclusion will be provided (ex: teaching about the Transatlantic Trade in World History, the Tuskegee Airmen in U.S. History, and stories of notable Black Arkansans in Arkansas History). Participants will leave with actionable strategies to provide well-rounded social studies education while staying within academic and institutional boundaries.

Arkansas teachers will receive two hours of professional development credit for attending this session.

Workshops are recommended, but not required, to be completed as a set.
