Commitment to Action

Early Childhood Expansion Infrastructure Fund

Commitment by

American Federation of Teachers

In 2015, The American Federation of Teachers, along with its partners including Invest in Us and Amalgamated Bank, committed to launch a $100 million loan fund to renovate 350 existing classroom facilities and build an additional 250 new classroom facilities nationwide, impacting 36,000 children over the next three years. This commitment will help schools address one of the early childhood movement’s biggest challenges—securing high quality facilities to meet the growing needs of early childhood programs. The revolving loan fund will provide affordable, flexible capital loans to public school child care operators for acquisition, construction, and term financing to build or improve child care facilities. The loan fund uses will include predevelopment, acquisition, construction and renovation, leasehold improvements, and energy-efficient improvements. The investments from this commitment are also expected to create approximately 4,200 direct, full time jobs. This effort will first launch in Baltimore and then expand to several additional cities.
