APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY
The Honeywell Science Kits approach will be delivered as a pilot in several locations throughout Mexico including Mexicali, Monterrey, and Mexico City. Two schools will be chosen at each location to receive the kits. The kits will contain materials focused on Newton's three laws of motion and reinforce the concepts of inertia, gravity, acceleration, mass, force, and momentum. Examples of materials included within the kits are measuring tapes, balls and hoops, toy cars and tracks, and a video tape showing real astronauts in space using the equipment. Training will be delivered to the teachers upon receipt of the materials and a follow up meeting with the school will take place three months after delivery to assess skill base of teachers and students through hands-on demonstrations and talks.
IMPLEMENTATION, TIMELINE, AND DELIVERABLES
Honeywell's turnkey math and science kits will be delivered to the selected schools through the regional Honeywell offices in Mexico. The kits will be delivered throughout September 2011, when the schools return from annual summer break. Review meetings with the schools will take place early December to review the knowledge of the students linked to Newton's three laws.
Mexico is recognized as under-performing in math and science; ranking 27th in the world for scientific and mathematical literacy. This new science kits initiative is linked to the research completed by the Mexican educational bureau, and linked to the lack of good quality in-class materials to support STEM education. Through the provision of in-classroom materials and training, local educators will be able to create an environment in which students may understand the value and depth of science and be able to explore the wide range of career choices.
