Commitment to Action

A Breakthrough in the Fight Against AIDS

Commitment by

United Postcode Lotteries

In 2011, the United Postcode Lotteries, together with STOP AIDS NOW! and the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), committed to launch a new program that, if successful, will eliminate all new HIV infections in Swaziland. This program will encourage everyone in Swaziland to be tested and will initiate treatment among HIV-positive people at an early stage. Scientific models and, more recently, clinical trials have shown that when implemented early and at high coverage rates, anti-retroviral treatment (ART) for HIV-positive individuals has the potential to drive dramatic reductions in new HIV infections. Through this commitment, United Postcode Lotteries and its partners will significantly improve the survival outcomes for those living with HIV while simultaneously working to reduce the number of new HIV infections. In the longer-term, this program may serve as a demonstration project for potential replication throughout Southern Africa and beyond.
