APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY
The Trust will develop school buildings that provide a safe and hygienic venue for the children to congregate and receive education. Furthermore, it will provide learning materials, uniforms, and clothing, as well as other basic amenities, like hot water in cold months and healthy meals before the end of the school day. The Trust will also provide medical assistance, teach children to look after their own health and personal hygiene, and sponsor operations, as well as give basic vaccinations, such as polio. Children will have access to mentoring and vocational learning opportunities to attend institutes of higher learning and apprenticeships that cultivate hands on skills and knowledge to demonstrate the benefits of employment.
IMPLEMENTATION, TIMELINE, AND DELIVERABLES
The goal to reach 2,000 children by 2012 is an immediate goal for the Nanaksar Trust. However, over the duration of the commitment, the organization plans to effectively scale up to reach thousands more. The Trust will monitor progress over the years and assess potential growth on a regular basis.
According to estimates published by the World Bank, over 456 million Indians (42% of the total Indian population) live below the global poverty line of US$1.25 per day. These figures conclude that a third of the global poor reside in India. In addition, India has the highest rate of malnutrition in the world for children under the age of three (New Global Poverty Estimates, World Bank).
The central projects of the Guru Nanak Garib Niwaj Education Society were developed to elevate the standard of living of the impoverished thru an accessible education system. These initiatives include but are not limited to: the development of schools, the provision of basic learning materials and clothing, sponsoring medical care to those in need of such aid, and supporting and mentoring vocational learning with a view on developing sustainable long-term skills that will allow for employment opportunities.
