APPROACH
By 2015, Navitus Sustainable Industries (Navitus) will divert 1,000,000 tons of trash per year from landfills and will transform it into enough electricity to power nearly 100,000 homes. Data from the EPA indicates that the environmental impact of eliminating over 1,000,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases is the equivalent of taking 213,267 passenger vehicles of the road.
To achieve this goal, Navitus will build three renewable power plants and comprehensive recycling facilities that will reduce landfilling and generate clean power and green jobs in the US and abroad over the next two years.
The Navitus system is fully integrated, including a comprehensive recycling system that is able to take unsorted municipal solid waste and effectively sort and separate recyclable materials (such as steel and aluminum). The system is then able to rapidly process the remaining waste into a sustainable synthetic gas, which is used to generate dependable renewable electricity.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), The United States generates over 250 million tons of trash each year of which less than 30% is recycled. Consequently, landfills are the third largest source of human-related methane emissions in the country, releasing an estimated 27.5 million metric tons of carbon equivalent into the atmosphere in 2009.
The US renewable power market is rapidly expanding, with 42% of the US electrical market currently under RPS (renewable portfolio standards) requirements. The energy sector is looking to cleaner power generation alternatives to replace aging and inefficient plants.
In addition, many communities are facing unprecedented financial strain, budget shortfalls, and record unemployment in the face of power outages, rising amounts of waste, growing power costs, and increasing environmental concerns. These challenges require a new look at sustainable solutions. Navitus Sustainable Industries is partnering with communities to transform garbage into energy, creating green jobs and economic opportunity.
