Poverty and violence in West Africa are impacted by the centralized control of limited fossil fuel resources. Alternative Fuels Group (AFG) has devised proprietary but simple blending techniques and additive formulations that enable making of fuel by individuals or small groups based on plant oils, including non-food plant oils like jatropha and algae. These fuels meet the stringent regulatory standards for health, safety, and performance, imposed in the United States. AFG will work with partners to create infrastructure for the growing of jatropha plant, so that indigenous populations can become more self-reliant in fabrication of renewable diesel fuels, with attending benefits for activities requiring such fuels, including transport, agriculture, and other manufacturing.
During the first year Alternative Fuels Group Inc.'s.(AFG) focus was on optimizing their formulation for individual and small group use in tropical climates, and in identifying partners who could help choose specific geographic targets (particularly with respect to existing or prospective jatropha and/or algae production in West Africa), and lay plans for effectively introducing AFG methods into those geographies. If a viable connection can be made with a source for jatropha / algae earlier, then production may start earlier.
The geographic targets may or may not have immediate access to jatropha / algae. If they don't, emphasis must be on getting it to them, or helping them to produce it. Past that point, AFG needs to build small scale mixing facilities, or identify appropriate mixing gear for family scale use, distribute it, and figure out the logistics of distributing AFG additive and any other required fuel components (this mix will depend on fuel formulation refinement not yet done). AFG will need to start on a small scale, e.g. one or several villages, get the logistics right, and then scale in an intelligent way. We won't know what that means until we have some experience on the ground. The 20,000 person target will need to account for full refinement of these distribution methods. The costs will need to be allocated in ways AFG cannot project until they know how dispersed the served population, the price of materials locally, the cost of shipping AFG product to the region, and a number of other factors.
