Five updates from the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) community this week – including a profile of a commitment bringing clean water to millions, restoring mangroves in the Bahamas, and supporting journalists in crisis on World Press Freedom Day.

Bahamas Mangrove Alliance announces new mangrove restoration commitment at CGI convening

At a CGI meeting last week focusing on women’s climate leadership in the Caribbean, the Bahamas Mangrove Alliance announced its new commitment to restore one million mangroves. Critical to fighting climate change, mangroves sequester carbon dioxide and offering habitat for marine life. Read more from Caribbean Magazine Plus and The Tribune. 

ROCKBLUE is on a mission to bring clean water to Africa

Veteran Scarsdale journalist Todd Sliss profiles CGI commitment-maker ROCKBlue in an in-depth profile, “Grandfather’s advice takes Macy global on mission for clean water”:

“With 2.2 billion people worldwide not getting proper water, ROCKBlue is currently helped 22 million of them. With the simple calculation of impacting only 10% of those in need, Macy called it “a drop in the bucket.” But that bucket had to start getting filled with clean water somehow and start somewhere in and effective, meaningful and long-lasting way.” Read more. 

CGI marks World Press Freedom Day

As May 3 marks World Press Freedom Day, we’re looking back at CGI 2023 — where Internews, the world’s largest media support nonprofit, committed to establishing a $10 million permanent risk and response fund to directly support independent media across the world. PBS Newshour spotlights Partners In Health, University of Global Health Equity

In a new special, PBS Newshour reported on the University of Global Health Equity’s (UGHE) efforts to educate and retain African doctors. Inaugurated in 2019 by the late Dr. Paul Farmer, UGHE is on a mission to provide high-quality community care. At CGI 2022, UGHE, Partners In Health, and their respective donor and government partners committed to educating 3,000 African health care leaders over the next 25 years. Watch here. 

Sostento reaches new milestone for its Commitment to Action

CGI commitment-maker, Sostento, has surpassed 25,000 Uber rides — equivalent to the distance from Earth to the moon —  as part of its “Rides for Health Equity” initiative. The program provides free Uber rides to underserved communities across the country, ensuring those in need can access healthcare services. At CGI 2023, Sostento committed to expanding the initiative.
