Ace Hotel, the Clinton Foundation, Tumblr & Jawbone Join City of Palm Springs & Palm Springs Resort to Host 2014’s First Codeathon Focused on Health in Palm Springs

Palm Springs, CA
Press Release

Codeathon will be held January 10-12

Sunday activities are open to the public and include prototype presentations and remarks from Mayor Steve Pougnet

Palm Springs, CA-- Following a successful series of New York-based codeathon events in 2013, Ace Hotel, the Clinton Foundation’s Health Matters Initiative (CHMI), Jawbone, and Tumblr will join the City of Palm Springs and Palm Springs Resorts to present the first health-based codeathon for 2014 on January 10-12 in Palm Springs, California.

Hosted at Ace Hotel Palm Springs, the three-day codeathon challenges interactive and game design master students from around the Valley to build a completely original and functional application prototype, based on one of the social determinants of health proposed by the Clinton Health Matters Initiative (CHMI). The prototype can be web, mobile, or desktop-based, and can be developed via data sets, APIs, conceptually or through ideas of the developers' own device. Codeathon participants are judged on six key criteria: playability, design, art accomplishing the prompt, potential impact, and each team’s health.

“The City of Palm Springs is delighted to host the Clinton Health Matters Initiative’s health focused codeathon in partnership with P.S. Resorts, ACE Hotel, Jawbone and Tumblr,” said Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet.  “This event is a perfect complement to the Healthy Planet, Healthy You fitness series and the City’s commitment to applying innovative technologies to improve the lives of our citizens.”

On Friday and Saturday, teams will develop their health applications in a healthy atmosphere that will include healthy food choices and physical activity boosters. These sessions are closed press.  On Sunday, programmers and designers will complete their projects in the morning, and present their protoypes to judges and the public.  Winners will be announced that day, following a speaking program that will include Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet, Clinton Health Matters Initiative CEO Ginny Ehrlich, and Travis Bogard, Vice President of Product Management and Strategy for Jawbone.  Winners will receive up to three years of facilities and mentoring in Coachella Valley iHub and/or Palm Springs Accelerator Campus, and a BIG JAMBOX from Jawbone.  The presentations and remarks are open press.

Previous codeathon participants have created apps focused on sleep, stress, and healthy eating.  Building on a week of events inspiring wellness locally and globally, this codeathon will challenge designers to create apps highlighting the health benefits of physical activity.  The week’s wellness events will include the Mayor’s Race, Swim, and Wellness Festival on Saturday January 11, and the Clinton Foundation’s 2014 Health Matters: Activating Wellness in Every Generation Conference, on January 13-15 in La Quinta, California.  This conference will showcase what leaders from across sectors – business, technology, sports and philanthropy – are doing to contribute to the health and wellness of people throughout the United States.

The Palm Springs codeathon will build on the previous successes of the three New York based codeathons, with one of the winning teams, FITCOIN, having already released a crowdfunding product to incentivize healthy behavior.  FITCOIN syncs up to users’ Jawbone UP account and turns activity into FITCOIN points, while challenging friends to see who can earn the most points and win. Learn more about FITCOIN at this link.

Codeathon partners invite local mobile, app and desk-top programmers to apply online at codeathon.splashthat.com. Deadline to apply has been extended to Monday, January 6, 2013 at 6am PST.  The codeathon takes place at the Ace Hotel and Swim Club located at 701 E Palm Canyon Dr, Palm Springs, California 92264.
