NEW YORK -- Today, Clinton Foundation Vice Chair Chelsea Clinton released the latest episode of “Why Am I Telling You This?” where she sat down with Kurt Kelly, the owner of the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City’s West Village neighborhood. Tomorrow is the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a multi-day series of demonstrations by members of the LGBTQ+ community, that began in the early hours of June 28, 1969, after a police raid of the Stonewall Inn. The uprising and subsequent demonstrations that ensued drew hundreds of supporters and jumpstarted a new chapter of activism and advocacy in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality – a fight that’s still going on today, half a century later.
In the episode, Chelsea and Kurt discuss the history of the Stonewall Inn, the modern LGBTQ+ movement, NYPD’s first formal apology for the raid, and how the Stonewall Gives Back Initiative is mobilizing LGBTQ+ communities in the United States. Additionally, Chelsea sat down with Katie Sgarro, an alumna of the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) who is helping LGBTQ+ asylum seekers find safe, immigrant-friendly services through her organization, AsylumConnect. CGI U is a Clinton Foundation program that engages college students around the world in addressing pressing societal and environmental issues through leadership development, social impact projects, skills training, and a global community of support. Katie’s CGI U commitment led to the advancement of the first online resource database of its kind in the United States.
For tomorrow’s anniversary, Chelsea Clinton will be speaking at the Stonewall Day celebration, hosted by Pride Live, at the Stonewall Inn. For more information about this event, please visit pridelive.org.
