We were saddened to learn of the death of Tom Foley. He was a great Speaker, whose leadership led to the enactment of the new economic plan that brought America its longest peacetime expansion, with the prosperity shared by people at all income levels, and at great personal cost, a crime bill that led to eight years of declining violent crimes. For three decades, Tom served as a practical progressive who believed that principled compromise and respect for opposing viewpoints are essential foundations of our democracy — core convictions that also made him an outstanding Ambassador to Japan. His good, warm heart and keen mind will be a lasting example for all who choose to devote their lives to public service. Our thoughts and prayers are with Heather and his entire family, and with Tom's many friends throughout the world.
