Statement from President and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of Vice President Walter Mondale

Hillary and I mourn the passing of Vice President Walter Mondale, and give thanks for his extraordinary life.

Fritz believed in the power of government to make a positive difference in people’s lives, and he proved it at every stage of his remarkable career-advancing civil rights, expanding consumer protection, cleaning our environment, and creating more educational and economic opportunities for all Americans.  As Minnesota Attorney General, Senator, Vice President, Democratic nominee for President, and private citizen, he remained true to his values and never stopped fighting for the causes he believed in and the country he loved.  And he did it all with deep policy knowledge, a tireless work ethic, and uncommon decency.

I will always be deeply grateful for his outstanding service as Ambassador to Japan and Special Envoy to Indonesia when I was President; for the more than 40 years of friendship, kindness, and counsel he gave me and Hillary; and for his example in approaching life’s ups and downs with humility, grace, and a wonderful sense of humor.

We loved him very much.  America and the world need a lot more people like him.  His legacy will live on in those he inspired and enlisted into public service, and in the hearts of countless Americans whose lives are better because he lived.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ted, William, his entire family, and everyone who loved him.
