Statement from President Clinton on the Passing of Alcee Hastings

Hillary and I mourn the passing of our friend Alcee Hastings.  From his days as a young civil rights lawyer desegregating schools in Broward County to his nearly 30 years in Congress and his long service on the Helsinki Commission, Alcee was a champion of justice, equality, and human dignity in South Florida, across America, and around the world.  He was a skilled and savvy legislator who knew how to get things done for his constituents, whether he was in the majority or the minority party—creating new economic opportunities, increasing access to quality, affordable health care, strengthening the social safety net, and protecting the environment.  His fine mind, deep knowledge, and strong leadership will be missed, but his legacy will live on in all the people whose lives are better because of his service.  We will be forever grateful for his friendship, and our thoughts and prayers are with Patricia, his children, and everyone who loved him.
