Statement from President Clinton on the Passing of Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison was a literary giant and a world-class human being. Her words stirred our souls and challenged our consciences to confront injustice, large or small, wherever it exists.  She once said, “The best art is political, and you ought to be able to make it unquestionably political and irrevocably beautiful at the same time.” In 88 remarkable years, she inspired affection, admiration, and awe as she gave the world her “best art” as brilliantly as anyone we had seen before or will likely ever see again.

How blessed we are that she gave us her gifts. We should all honor her by reading her 1993 Nobel Prize speech for the light it sheds on our current condition.

Hillary and I are grateful for her life and the kindness she showed us through the years. We send our condolences to the Morrison family and the countless people Toni touched and inspired.
