The CGI Community Responding to Afghanistan Earthquake: How You Can Help
Last week, a devastating 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province. The effects have been catastrophic – killing more than 2,000 people and injuring countless others. Relief efforts have been stalled by health facilities quickly becoming overcrowded. Members of the CGI community are on the ground, providing much needed assistance such as medical supplies, food, funding, and more.
See below for the latest information on what the CGI community is doing and how you can help.

Americares, which has worked in Afghanistan since 1986 and has extensive experience responding to major earthquakes worldwide, is mobilizing emergency response efforts. The organization is coordinating with local partners to restore health services, deliver emergency funding, and provide hygiene kits and essential relief items to survivors.

CARE, a women- and girls-focused relief organization active in Afghanistan since 1961, is assessing needs on the ground.
CARE’s teams have reported that over 90% of survivors are sheltering in open spaces exposed to the elements. With nearly all households destroyed and critical damage to water and sanitation infrastructure, non-food items, like blankets, and hygiene supplies are desperately needed.

The aid includes life saving medicine, insulin, antibiotics, and emergency supplies to support frontline health workers treating survivors.

Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is conducting assessments and delivering aid such as kitchen supplies, shelter repair kits, blankets, hygiene/sanitation kits, cash assistance, and safe drinking water.
Impacted communities had already been strained by displacement, food insecurity, drought, and mass returns of refugees from neighboring countries. The NRC is underscoring the urgent need for donors to sustain long-term engagement and not just to fund immediate relief, but to help rebuild resilience beyond perpetual emergencies.

They’re delivering emergency medical treatment, clean water, shelter support, and launching child-friendly spaces to offer critical mental health support for children traumatized by the quake.
