Press Release: Clinton Center Wins Architectural Award
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced today that the William J. Clinton Presidential Center has received a 2006 Honor Award for Architecture, the profession's highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architecture. Award recipients will be honored in May at the AIA 2006 National Convention and Design Expo in Los Angeles.
Joseph Fleischer of Polshek Partnership, the Partner-in-Charge of the Clinton Presidential Center, will discuss the building's features and the award's significance during a media briefing at 10:30 a.m. (CST) at the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock. Mr. Fleischer will be joined by Clinton Foundation Chairman Skip Rutherford of Little Rock, who coordinated the planning of the facility. Dr. David Alsobrook, director of the Clinton Presidential Library, and members of the design team.
The Clinton Presidential Center was designed by Richard M. Olcott and James S. Polshek of Polshek Partnership Architects. In its first year, the Library and Museum has far exceeded its anticipated attendance and received honor awards from local AIA Chapters, including the AIA New York State and the AIA New York.
Located within a 30-acre public park along the Arkansas River, the Clinton Presidential Center, which includes a museum, archive and public policy center in a refurbished historic railroad station is an integral element in the revitalization and expansion of downtown Little Rock. Clad in glass and metal, the main body of the Center hovers over the ground plane, the building's bridge-like form a reference to Little Rock's distinctive Six Bridges and a metaphor for the optimism and achievements of the Clinton Presidency. In addition to the 240-foot long, naturally-lit permanent exhibition hall, the program includes a temporary exhibit gallery, education and media center, great hall and café.
Located in New York City since the founding of the practice in 1963, Polshek Partnership is a 150-person firm known for architectural excellence and for its longstanding commitment to cultural, educational, governmental and scientific institutions. The seven partners proceed from the shared belief that the most elegant architectural responses are both technically and socially relevant to their time and place.
